- Acquire an API Key
Once activated, you need to sign-up for an Akismet API key. If you do not have one, you can register and signup for a free account at WordPress.com to get one. Then, a new API key will be emailed to you. Make sure to copy and save it in a hidden place where no one else can have access to it.
NOTE: One API key from WordPress will work for multiple website installations. This simply means, you will not have to get one every time. Just keep the given API close at hand.
- Add API
Once you have your API with you, go to WordPress Administration panel. Under “Plugins”, hit the Akismet config link on the left side from the navigation menu. Then, copy-and-paste or type in the API key into the field, and click “Update API Key” button.
Tips in Using Akismet
* Check for Good Comments Under Spam
Akismet sorts and deletes your spam messages so you won’t have to take time in doing it. This tool is effective in doing this job, but never be too complacent. There are some rare occasions where good messages are accidentally marked as spam. So, always have a habit to check your emails once in awhile. You might be surprised to see a friend’s message tagged as spam.
In cases where this happens, easily unmark the said good message and let it back to be included in the legitimate comments. Simply go to Admin panel. Next, click on “Comments” and then on, “Spam”. Locate the comment, and click on the “Not Spam” button.
* Undoing deletion of Spam
There is also an option to NOT delete spam messages automatically if it’s more than a month old, by checking it off at Akismet’s configuration page. In this way, you can keep track of all of your comments and see if some good ones were marked as spam.
Now that you know how to install a WordPress plugin Akismet, try it on your WordPress now!
